So it goes without saying that I’m hooked on you
I received the Pretty Little Liars soundtrack in the mail on Monday and after giving the songs a listen and rewatching the parts of the episodes where the songs from the soundtrack are played, one of my favourite songs would have to be “More of You” by MoZella.
The song, whose first line I quote in the subject line of this entry, is played in the pilot when Aria and Ezra hook up in the bathroom to the Bar and Grill. Unbeknownst to them at this point, he’s going to be her English teacher. But they form a connection in the moments prior that is, to put it simply, undeniable. Unaware they’re about to break all the rules (well, not ALL, there’s no statutory rape going on… yet), the song adds so much to the scene. It lets you in the characters’ heads. And listening to the entire song, you get these hints that their relationship is wrong, but it’s hard to resist the temptation.
All in all, it sums up the Aria and Ezra relationship quite well. The beat is good, too. Tempo is fast and upbeat, like there’s a sense of urgency. A hunger that can’t be squelched. Perfect choice for their first makeout scene.Vodpod videos no longer available.
Another song I like from the soundtrack for its placement on the show is Fay Wolf’s cover of the song “Your Love.” The song is played in episode 14, “Careful What You Wish 4,” at the dance when Sean breaks up with Hanna because she wants to dance the last dance with Lucas, then Hanna and Lucas dance. The song ends when Spencer and Aria go to help Emily who is drunk. I like this song because it has a nice melody and because a few lyrics match up perfectly to the on-screen action. Here are some examples:
- “You know I’d do anything for you” has the camera on Lucas looking on at Hanna as Sean exits. He really would do anything for her.
- “I don’t want to lose your love tonight” has the camera with Hanna as she tearfully hugs Lucas and they dance. She doesn’t want to lose his friendship, which means a lot to her.
- “Try to stop my hands from shaking” also has the camera with Hanna. She is trying to calm her nerves.
So the song really does match up with Hanna and Lucas and other lyrics, which aren’t so clear on the show, make good sense for them, too:
I just wanna use your love tonight, yeah.
I don’t want to lose your love tonight
Hanna is using Lucas and she knows it. A song that really tugs at your heartstrings.
